Looking at Movies Assignment

 1.      Based on his filmography, what would be your predictions for this movie (a science-fiction film)?

Based on Steven Spielberg’s filmography, my prediction for this movie is to see terror and the shark is going to eat someone and keep going back but eventually the people will catch it. I would hear screaming and ominous music as well as music that adds to the suspense. I would see all of this done professionally because of Steven’s experience and I think he would be great at capturing the fear and catching the audience's attention in this film.

2.      Identify the overall film’s implicit messages about...

·       Technology

·       Man vs. Nature

·      The films overall implicit message about technology is when they use the megaphone and the boat. These are some examples of technology used in the film that have a connection to the scene. The megaphone is used for an announcement, and it projects the announcement out, so the people know it is important.

·      The films overall implicit message about man vs. nature is the man being the man on shore and on the boat as well as the people at the beach in the water. The nature would be the shark that is trying to eat people.

3.      What emotion does the film clip evoke in its audience?

The film evokes suspense and terror. We see the people in the water scream and run in fear as the shark comes closer and closer to the shore. The music adds to the emotion of the film making it even more suspenseful as well as ominous.

4.      Explain how the film clip evokes emotion through emotion via...

·       Mise-en-scene (lighting, costuming, setting, props, etc.)

·       Cinematography (camera movement and composition)

·       Editing (cutting, rhythm/pacing)

·       Sound

The clip evokes emotion using the mise-en-scene by bringing disaster and chaos with the breaking of the boat window and showing how things did not go as planned also making it suspenseful. The. Cinematography evokes emotion through the camera movement by showing random movements and camera shakes and fast camera movement to show something is about to happen soon and it will bring fear. For example, when the shark was coming, and the camera was quickly showing everyone in the water including the kids playing. It evokes emotion using editing by cutting from one scene to another letting us know some time has passed. Sound has a significant impact on the emotion of the film. The music adds fear into the audience as well as suspense having them at the edge of their seats dying to know what happens next or what is about to happen. We hear the music, and we start to get scared for the character sin the film.
