·      Harry Potter –Warner brothers

·      The media: everything from newspapers you read to the apps on your phone, are part of a big web of deals, partnerships, and mergers

·      Depending on how the media web is structured it can be beneficial for the consumer but depending on how much power it has, it may be dangerous for the consumers as well

·      Disney: ABC, Disney channel, ESPN, Miramax, Disney theme parks

·      Comcast: universal studios, NBC universal, Bravo, telemundo

·      News Corp: Fox

·      Comcast Disney and fox planning a merger

·      In 1877, The Bell Family were the first ones to create a monopoly

·      Bell becomes dominant telephone provider and is the first to build a nationwide long distance telephone network

·      They renamed their company to The American Telephone and Telegraph Company (AT&T)

·      They owned everything having to do with telephone, wires, lines, and actual phones

·      In the mid-1980’s you had to rent a phone

·      Walled Garden- closed system that was not interoperable with other systems or companies

·      President Franklin D. Roosevelt established the Federal Communications Commission (FCC)

·      FCC implements a national radio and wire service in the US, but the FCC also has the authority to examine AT&T’s business

·      Vertical integration – monopoly, they have control over the goods quality of service and cost

·      Anti-trust laws are what exist to try and prevent monopolies – when a single company dominates an entire market or industry

v Preventing monopolies or if you have to break them up, protects consumers and encourages competition

·      In 1982 AT&T let people buy their own phones but in 1984 the monopoly really breaks up and the company separates into u different smaller companies

·      The breakup caused new inventions like answering machines, three-way calling, and caller ID

·      Tiered services – if you pay more you get faster internet

·      Use their vertical integration to create a monopoly

·      In some countries without net neutrality ISP’s have already created walled gardens, you pay a base fee for internet service and then pay additional fees

·      Google, Facebook, and Amazon fall under the tech company

·      Alphabet is googles parent company

·      Amazon is a dominant platform and creates its own tv and movie

·      Facebook owns instagram and WhatsApp

·      FCC set rules for what kind of content is allowed on tv, radio, and phones
