Camera Angle Assignment
REVIEW OF CAMERA ANGLES
Inside Out 2 (2024)
Producer: Mark Nielsen
Mikayla Eugene
I am discussing the different camera angles and the affect it has on the emotion of the audience, in the 2024 film, “Inside Out 2”. I chose this movie because I loved the first movie, and I have not watched the second one yet. I enjoy the concept of the movie and how they move between the different emotions of Joy, Fear, Anger, Disgust, and Sadness to the new emotions, Anxiety, Ennui, Embarrassment, and Envy and Riley. There are many easily identifiable camera angles in each scene that may be used in other films except action and/or science fictions movies. Most to all the camera angles are used and I could not help but notice the one chosen as I sat and watched the movie.

The first camera angle that I personally noticed was an over-the-shoulder shot that showed when the referee called a penalty for Riley pushing/tripping a girl on the opposing team. This shot shows us Riley’s POV, the side of her head and her shoulder. It makes the audience feel as if they are connected to the characters in the film or movie. You feel as if you are experiencing the scene with the character and how close the characters are.

In the same scene as the first camera angle, it also includes a freeze frame. Riley gets a penalty, and she starts to think about her past while she sits in the penalty box. A freeze frame is a repeated frame that makes the subject appear frozen or as if the movie is paused. It highlights the moment to show it is a significant event. Narrating a story is the first thing that comes to mind when I see this frame in a film.

Soon after I noticed the freeze frame, I notice a wide angle. This shot is showing all of Riley’s islands of personality through the window of headquarters and the emotions, Joy, Fear, Sadness, Disgust, and anger running up to gaze at them. Each island is seen out of one of the five windows and the biggest window shows the biggest island. I also noticed that one window does not have an island which might be foreshadowing something for a new movie or a different series. This camera angle tells the audience spatial information and exaggerates the perspective.
There were many other camera angles in the first couple minutes of the film, like the ones shown before but, I was most excited to comment on this camera angle because it really tood out to me for its unique perspective of a shot. This is one of my favorite angles in a film. This high angle or aerial shot shows the significance of the scene. It also shows that the scene is part of a bigger picture. The high angles make me feel that the characters are less significant, and that I am an onlooker

The scene went from a high angle shot to a close up shot that shows Riley’s face as she steps back onto the hockey rink and continues to play after she had gotten a penalty. For pushing a girl slightly to hard. This close up scammers angle is focusing on Riley herself instead of the scenery. It adds a dramatic effect to the scene and has the audience and I feeling her emotions through the screen. It tells the audience that she is about to do something great or exciting. It could also make someone anxious. She starts to smile in this shot as well, which shows us that she will be achieving something that she knows she can do
