What was the grammatical move?

Describe, in detail, the specific move that you saw.

What was the effect? Why did the director choose to film it this way?

Movement

 Tilt. The camera moved bottom-to-top when Jenny helps Forrest up when he gets knocks down with a rock that the bullies throw at him.

 The director wanted to show how Forrest in the condition he is was was on the ground and could not get up himself. They wanted the audience to feel sympathy for him and show his full body and how Jenny helps him up.

 Movement

Tilt. When the bullies are picking up rocks to throw at Forrest, the camera moves from the bottom of the screen to the top.

  The director wants to show the movement of the bullies picking up the rocks and what they were doing.

Movement

Tilt. When the bullies are picking up their bikes to chase down Forrest

   To show their actions of picking up the bikes, as if we were there watching them do it.

Movement

Pan. When the camera went from the bullies on the bike to Jenny saying, “run Forrest, run.” (right-to-left)

   This helps the audience realize the Jenny is there and helps them notice details they may not see.

Angles

Low angle. When the bully throws the first rock at Forrest head, and he falls to the floor where it shows the bullies.

 This is to show that Forest is weak and powerless while the bullies are overpowering him now.

 Point of view. When Forrest looks back at the bullies chasing him on their bikes.

  To show that they are chasing him. Also, to show us the scariness of 


Distance

Long shot. When Forrest runs into the open field of grass after he gets away from the bullies.

Helps the viewer see how Forrest interacts with his surroundings which is the open field of grass.

Movement

Pan. The camera moves right-to-left when Forrest runs across the bridge.

This is showing his movement of him crossing over the bridge and how he runs across.

Forrest bump is getting bullied by 3 little kids who threw rocks at him and called him names. They chase Forrest on their bikes until his leg braces break off and he speeds off. He realizes that he loves running and everywhere he goes, he runs.

 

 

 

 

 

1)    In detail, explain how one of the film elements you listed above contributed to the understanding of the plot.

 





           When the camera is at a low angle it makes Forrest seem weak while bullies are standing, and he is on the floor, overpowering him which helps build the plot of him running for so long. Because he was being bullied.

 

 

 

 

 

 

2)    In detail, explain how one of the film elements contributed to the development of one of the characters.

 





           When the camera goes into a long shot, it shows how significant his surroundings are, and how he interacts with it for the first time. He is running through the field for the first time without his braces. This helps develop him as a character to become a boy who loves to run.
